ABOUT DR DARREN CARPENTER

Dr Carpenter is a registered Doctor of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture based in Sandton, Johannesburg, with a clinical focus on fertility support and musculoskeletal pain management. Since 2017, he has helped patient with conditions such as IVF, chronic neck pain, lower back pain, and sciatica.

He completed his Master’s degree at the University of Johannesburg in 2024, where his research focused on the use of acupuncture in the treatment of sports injuries. This advanced training underpins his precise, results-driven approach to both pain management and physical performance.

Dr Carpenter holds dual qualifications, a BSc in Complementary Health Science and a bachelor's of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, enabling him to integrate traditional principles with modern, evidence-informed care. His clinical approach is research-driven while remaining highly personalised to each patient.

He has further advanced his training internationally, completing a clinical workshop at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University focused on modern acupuncture protocols. In addition, he has presented his work at international acupuncture conferences, reflecting his ongoing contribution to the field and commitment to staying at the forefront of clinical practice.

In addition to clinical practice, he serves as the Councillor for Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture at the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa and is the Vice President of the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Africa. He is also actively involved in mentoring and clinical education, contributing to the development of future practitioners.

Dr. Carpenter is deeply committed to ensuring that patients receive high-quality, effective healthcare. Since 2022, he has served as the Councillor for Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture at the AHPCSA, a regulatory body dedicated to upholding professional standards across various allied health professions. In this role, he advocates for the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture within South Africa’s broader healthcare system, ensuring that practitioners adhere to best practices and ethical guidelines.
In addition to his role as Councillor, Dr. Carpenter contributes to the AHPCSA’s governance through his involvement in the Finance and Communications Committees. Through the Finance Committee, he helps oversee the organization’s financial sustainability, ensuring resources are effectively allocated to support its regulatory functions. As a member of the Communications Committee, he plays a key role in promoting public awareness and understanding of allied health services, fostering transparency, and facilitating communication between practitioners, regulatory bodies, and the public.


Dr. Carpenter is dedicated to promoting the development and advancement of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture in South Africa. He serves as the Vice President of the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Africa (CMAAA), where he works to elevate the profession, support practitioner development, and foster greater awareness of its benefits within the healthcare landscape.
In addition to his leadership role, Dr. Carpenter is actively engaged in research within his field. His scholarly contributions include numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals, reflecting his commitment to expanding the evidence base for Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture while enhancing its credibility and integration into modern healthcare practices.


Community Service
Dr. Darren Carpenter has been further assisting various volunteer screening programs, tirelessly dedicating his expertise to ensure their success. As a seasoned practitioner, his leadership inspires the team, fostering a spirit of collaboration and commitment to improving public health access for low-income populations. This forms part of his larger commitment to providing quality healthcare to the entire population of South Africa and to ensure disadvantaged communities gain access to the quality and effective treatment options provided by Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.
