Fertility and IVF Support Alongside Medical Care: How Acupuncture May Help
Trying to conceive can be an emotional journey. For some people, pregnancy happens relatively easily. For others, the process involves months or years of uncertainty, medical investigations, fertility medication and procedures such as Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).
During this time, many patients look for additional ways to care for their physical and emotional well-being.
One of the questions we are frequently asked is:
Can acupuncture support fertility treatment without interfering with my medical care?
The short answer is yes. Acupuncture can be used as a complementary treatment alongside care from your gynaecologist, fertility specialist, or clinic. The purpose is not to replace medical fertility treatment, but to provide individualised support throughout what can be a physically and emotionally demanding process.
At The Centre of Clinical Acupuncture in Woodmead, Sandton, we combine Traditional Chinese Medicine principles with current scientific evidence. Our goal is to support each patient with realistic expectations, clear communication and a treatment plan that respects their existing fertility care.

What Does Fertility and IVF Support Involve?
Short answer: Fertility support involves caring for your overall health and well-being while you continue with the investigations or treatment recommended by your medical team.
Fertility difficulties can arise for many different reasons. These may include:
Problems with ovulation
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Endometriosis
Changes in ovarian reserve
Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
Uterine conditions
Sperm-related factors
Age-related changes
Unexplained infertility
A combination of male and female factors
For this reason, fertility care should never follow a one-size-fits-all approach.
Your fertility specialist is responsible for diagnosing possible causes of infertility, arranging the necessary investigations and managing treatments such as medication, surgery, IUI or IVF. Acupuncture may then be incorporated as one supportive part of this broader healthcare plan.
When Should You Seek a Fertility Assessment?
The World Health Organisation defines infertility as not achieving pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse.
Current reproductive-medicine guidance generally recommends seeking a fertility assessment:
After 12 months of trying, when the female partner is younger than 35
After six months, when the female partner is 35 or older
More promptly when the female partner is over 40
Earlier, when there is a known medical or reproductive concern
You may benefit from an earlier assessment if you have very irregular or absent periods, suspected endometriosis, PCOS, previous pelvic infections or surgery, recurrent pregnancy losses, sexual difficulties, previous cancer treatment or a known sperm-related concern.
Where a couple is trying to conceive, both partners should usually be considered. Male factors are an important part of fertility and should be assessed alongside female factors where appropriate.
Acupuncture can be started while investigations are taking place, but it should not delay appropriate medical assessment or time-sensitive fertility treatment.
How May Acupuncture Support Fertility Care?
Short answer: Acupuncture may support fertility, relaxation, emotional well-being, sleep and certain physical symptoms while you are trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment.
Acupuncture involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into carefully selected points on the body. Treatment is personalised according to your health history, fertility journey, current symptoms and stage of medical treatment.
Patients commonly use acupuncture during fertility care to:
Assist with increasing IVF success rates
Promote relaxation
Reduce feelings of stress or anxiety
Support better sleep
Relieve muscular tension and headaches
Manage general discomfort during fertility treatment
Create a regular space for rest and emotional support
Support overall well-being while following a fertility plan
Some patients also appreciate having a healthcare practitioner who takes time to discuss their symptoms, fertility timeline and personal concerns in a calm and structured environment.
These supportive benefits matter. Fertility treatment can become dominated by blood tests, scans, medication schedules and outcome measurements. Acupuncture appointments can provide time to focus on how you are feeling throughout the process.
What Does the Research Say?
Acupuncture is one of the most extensively researched complementary treatments used alongside fertility care and IVF.
Studies have investigated whether acupuncture may influence:
Nervous-system activity
Pelvic and uterine blood flow
Stress and anxiety
Pain perception
Sleep and emotional well-being
Clinical pregnancy and live-birth outcomes
Research into acupuncture’s effect on pregnancy outcomes is still developing. Although some systematic reviews have reported encouraging improvements in clinical pregnancy and live-birth rates, further high-quality research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
The most balanced way to understand the evidence is that acupuncture may be a valuable form of supportive care, even though its precise effect on fertility outcomes remains uncertain.
Acupuncture Before Fertility Treatment
Some patients begin acupuncture while trying to conceive naturally or while preparing for IUI or IVF.
Starting before treatment may provide time to:
Review your fertility and general health history
Discuss your menstrual cycle and current symptoms
Establish realistic treatment goals
Improve sleep and stress-management routines
Address headaches, tension or other symptoms
Develop a supportive routine before medical treatment becomes busier
There is no single starting time that is necessary for every patient. Although starting several weeks before treatment may provide more time to establish care, you have not “missed your opportunity” if your fertility cycle has already begun.
The most appropriate timing depends on your needs, medical plan, schedule and personal preferences.
Acupuncture During Ovarian Stimulation
During an IVF cycle, fertility medication is used to encourage several ovarian follicles to develop. This stage usually involves injections, blood tests and ultrasound monitoring before egg retrieval.
The physical and emotional experience varies considerably between patients. Some feel relatively well, while others experience bloating, headaches, fatigue, muscular tension, sleep disturbance or anxiety.
Acupuncture during this phase may be used to:
Support egg development
Encourage relaxation
Support sleep
Reduce muscular tension
Help manage headaches
Provide emotional support during frequent monitoring
Help patients feel more comfortable and supported during treatment
Acupuncture sessions are adapted to your stage of treatment and current symptoms. Your practitioner should know which medication you are using and the expected dates of your monitoring, trigger injection and egg retrieval.
Acupuncture Around Egg Retrieval
Egg retrieval can be an important and sometimes stressful milestone. Patients may feel anxious before the procedure or experience temporary abdominal discomfort afterwards.
Where your fertility specialist is satisfied that complementary care is appropriate, acupuncture may be used around this stage to support:
Relaxation before the procedure
General comfort
Rest and recovery
Sleep
Emotional well-being while awaiting fertilisation results
Acupuncture Around Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer is often one of the most emotionally significant stages of IVF. Many patients describe a mixture of hope, excitement and anxiety.
Some people choose to have acupuncture near the time of embryo transfer because they find it helps them feel calmer and more settled. The practical aim is to improve blood flow to the uterus, balance hormones, support relaxation and make the day feel less overwhelming.
The appointment should be planned around your fertility clinic’s schedule. It should not create additional pressure, rushing or anxiety. If arranging acupuncture on the day of transfer feels stressful, treatment can be scheduled at another suitable time.
Ideally, the treatments should be 1-2 days before and after transfer.
Support During the Two-Week Wait
The period between embryo transfer and the pregnancy test can be particularly difficult. It is common to notice every physical sensation and wonder whether it is caused by fertility medication, implantation or an approaching period.
During this stage, acupuncture may help provide:
Support patients struggling with frequent miscarriages
A structured opportunity to rest
Support for sleep
Relief from tension
A calmer environment in which to manage uncertainty
General emotional and physical support
Acupuncture cannot confirm whether implantation has occurred or predict the pregnancy-test result. Testing should be performed at the time recommended by your fertility clinic.
It is also important to continue all prescribed medication unless your fertility specialist advises you to stop or make a change.

Acupuncture While Trying to Conceive Naturally
Acupuncture may also be used by patients who are trying to conceive without IVF.
Treatment may focus on menstrual problems, general well-being, stress, sleep or another health concern identified during the consultation. However, acupuncture should not be used as a substitute for investigating possible causes of delayed conception.
If a fertility assessment is indicated, acupuncture and medical investigations can usually take place alongside one another.
This coordinated approach allows patients to receive supportive care without losing valuable time.
Fertility Support Is Not Only for Women
Fertility is often discussed as though it is solely a female concern, but male factors may contribute to difficulty conceiving.
Medical assessment may include a reproductive and general health history, semen analysis and further investigation where abnormalities are identified.
Male partners may also consider acupuncture for stress, sleep or other appropriate health concerns during the fertility journey. However, acupuncture should not replace semen analysis or assessment by a suitably qualified medical practitioner when this is needed.
Providing support to both partners can also help reduce the sense that one person is carrying the entire physical and emotional responsibility for fertility treatment.
Is Fertility Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture is generally considered a low-risk treatment when performed by a suitably qualified and registered practitioner using sterile, single-use needles.
Possible temporary effects may include:
Mild bruising
Brief tenderness at a needle site
Tiredness
Fertility treatment and early pregnancy require additional care. Always tell your practitioner about:
Your fertility diagnosis
Your current medication
Supplements or herbal products
Egg-retrieval and embryo-transfer dates
Bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication
Previous pregnancy complications
A positive pregnancy test or the possibility of pregnancy
Any new or unusual symptoms
In South Africa, patients should confirm that their acupuncturist is appropriately registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA). We have two registers in South Africa, so you would need to check both the acupuncture and Chinese Medicine registers. You can check this here.
Can Acupuncture Be Combined With Fertility Medication?
Acupuncture can generally be used alongside fertility medication when treatment is provided appropriately, and your practitioner understands your medical protocol.
Acupuncture should not change the dosage or timing of your medication. Decisions about fertility medication remain the responsibility of your fertility specialist.
Bring an updated list of your medication and supplements to your first consultation. It is also helpful to share important dates from your fertility plan so that acupuncture appointments can be coordinated appropriately.
What About Chinese Herbal Medicine and Supplements?
Chinese herbal medicine and dietary supplements require greater caution during fertility treatment.
Natural products may still interact with medication, affect blood clotting or influence how substances are processed by the body. A product being described as natural does not automatically make it appropriate during IVF or early pregnancy.
Do not begin, stop or combine herbal medicine or supplements during fertility treatment without discussing them with your fertility specialist or the practitioner prescribing them.
Supporting Your General Health During Fertility Treatment
Acupuncture works best as part of a sensible, coordinated approach to your health.
Depending on your individual circumstances and medical advice, this may include:
Eating a varied and balanced diet
Taking folic acid and other supplements recommended for you
Avoiding smoking and vaping
Limiting or avoiding alcohol
Participating in appropriate physical activity
Getting enough sleep
Managing existing medical conditions
Seeking psychological or counselling support when needed
Maintaining contact with supportive friends, family or fertility groups
Try to avoid extreme diets, complicated supplement routines or lifestyle rules that create additional anxiety.
Most importantly, fertility difficulties are not your fault. An unsuccessful cycle does not mean that you failed to relax enough, ate the wrong food or did not follow your routine perfectly.
Supporting your health should help you feel cared for, not blamed or overwhelmed.
What Happens During a First Fertility Acupuncture Consultation?
Your first consultation allows us to understand your fertility journey and what you would like support with.
We will usually discuss:
How long you have been trying to conceive
Any known fertility diagnosis
Relevant investigations and results
Previous pregnancies or pregnancy losses
Previous IUI or IVF cycle
Your menstrual cycle and symptoms
Your current fertility protocol
Medication, supplements and other treatment
Sleep, stress, digestion and general health
Your expectations of acupuncture
Where acupuncture is clinically appropriate, your first treatment can usually be provided during the same appointment.
Fine, sterile needles are inserted into carefully selected acupuncture points. Most patients find the treatment comfortable and relaxing, and some fall asleep during the session.
Your treatment plan will be based on your needs, fertility schedule and response to treatment. There is no universal number of sessions that every fertility patient must complete.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture improve IVF success?
Some studies and systematic reviews have reported encouraging fertility outcomes. The evidence for acupuncture is still developing, but it looks promising.
Acupuncture may also help with relaxation, anxiety, sleep and certain symptoms rather than being viewed as a guaranteed way to achieve pregnancy.
When should I start fertility acupuncture?
You can begin before trying to conceive, while undergoing investigations or during fertility treatment. Starting earlier may provide more time to establish a supportive routine, but there is no compulsory starting point that applies to everyone.
Can I start acupuncture after my IVF cycle has begun?
Yes, in many cases. Your practitioner will need to know which medication you are using, your current stage of treatment and the dates of any planned procedures.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on your goals, symptoms, treatment schedule and response. Some patients attend during specific parts of an IVF cycle, while others prefer ongoing support.
A realistic plan should be discussed after your first consultation. You should not feel pressured into committing to an unnecessarily long course of treatment.
Can acupuncture replace IVF or fertility medication?
No. Acupuncture does not replace fertility investigations, medication, surgery, IUI or IVF when these are medically indicated. It is intended to complement appropriate fertility care.
Is acupuncture safe after embryo transfer?
Acupuncture can often be provided after embryo transfer when adapted appropriately. Inform your practitioner about the transfer and follow all medication and activity instructions from your fertility clinic.
Will being stressed reduce my chances of pregnancy?
Fertility treatment can be stressful, but patients should not be blamed for feeling anxious or for the outcome of a cycle. You do not need to achieve a perfectly calm emotional state for treatment to work.
Managing stress is worthwhile because your comfort and quality of life matter throughout the process.
Personalised Support Throughout Your Fertility Journey
Fertility treatment is about more than medication, test results and procedures. It affects your body, emotions, relationships, daily routine and hopes for the future.
Acupuncture may provide a calm and supportive space throughout this process. For some patients, the main value is relaxation. For others, it helps with sleep, tension, headaches or the emotional demands of treatment.
At The Centre of Clinical Acupuncture, we provide fertility and IVF support with honesty, compassion and respect for conventional medical care. Treatment is individualised according to your health, your fertility plan and what matters most to you.
