Does acupuncture improve IVF success?

Some studies and systematic reviews have reported encouraging fertility outcomes. The evidence for acupuncture is still developing, but it looks promising. Acupuncture may also help with relaxation, anxiety, sleep and certain symptoms rather than being viewed as a guaranteed way to achieve pregnancy.

When should I start fertility acupuncture?

You can begin before trying to conceive, while undergoing investigations or during fertility treatment. Starting earlier may provide more time to establish a supportive routine, but there is no compulsory starting point that applies to everyone.

Can I start acupuncture after my IVF cycle has begun?

Yes, in many cases. Your practitioner will need to know which medication you are using, your current stage of treatment and the dates of any planned procedures.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your goals, symptoms, treatment schedule and response. Some patients attend during specific parts of an IVF cycle, while others prefer ongoing support. A realistic plan should be discussed after your first consultation. You should not feel pressured into committing to an unnecessarily long course of treatment.

Can acupuncture replace IVF or fertility medication?

No. Acupuncture does not replace fertility investigations, medication, surgery, IUI or IVF when these are medically indicated. It is intended to complement appropriate fertility care.

Is acupuncture safe after embryo transfer?

Acupuncture can often be provided after embryo transfer when adapted appropriately. Inform your practitioner about the transfer and follow all medication and activity instructions from your fertility clinic.

Will being stressed reduce my chances of pregnancy?

Fertility treatment can be stressful, but patients should not be blamed for feeling anxious or for the outcome of a cycle. You do not need to achieve a perfectly calm emotional state for treatment to work. Managing stress is worthwhile because your comfort and quality of life matter throughout the process.
