Preparing for your first acupuncture consultation in Woodmead

2 min read

Booking a first appointment can bring a few questions. What should you bring? What will you discuss? Will treatment happen on the day?

At The Centre of Clinical Acupuncture in Woodmead, Sandton, your first visit begins with a discussion of your concerns, health history and treatment goals. The purpose is to understand your circumstances and consider whether acupuncture is suitable for you. Where clinically appropriate, your first acupuncture treatment is included in the appointment. First-visit information.

What should you bring?

Bring the questions you want answered. A few notes can help you explain what has been happening without having to remember everything during the appointment.

Useful things to prepare include:

  • When your symptoms started and whether their pattern has changed.

  • How they affect activities, work or sleep.

  • Treatments you have tried and what you noticed afterwards.

  • A list of current medicines and other treatments.

  • Relevant reports or referral information, if you already have them.

Tell your practitioner about medical conditions and medicines, as these can affect suitability. Keep other healthcare professionals involved in your care informed about complementary treatment too. NHS guidance.

What will you discuss?

The consultation is a chance to describe your experience in your own words. You might explain that sitting through a meeting is uncomfortable, that a familiar activity has become difficult, or that you want to understand your care options more clearly.

Think about what matters most to you. A practical goal gives the conversation a starting point: “I would like to walk more comfortably” is more specific than “I want to feel better.” These are goals to discuss, rather than promised results.

Which questions are useful to ask?

You are welcome to ask how a proposed treatment relates to your concerns. For example:

  • Why might acupuncture be appropriate in my circumstances?

  • What benefits, risks and uncertainties should I understand?

  • What will treatment involve, and what might I feel?

  • How will we review whether the plan is helping?

  • What should I do if my symptoms change?

If you feel unsure about needles or another part of treatment, say so. You can ask for an explanation before deciding how to proceed.

Will you have treatment at the first visit?

The clinic includes a first acupuncture treatment where it is clinically appropriate. Suitability is considered during the consultation; booking an appointment does not mean that every person will receive the same treatment. Clinic booking information.

Ask what is proposed and what the next step would involve. Decisions about follow-up should reflect your circumstances and the discussion with your practitioner, rather than a universal number of sessions.

Preparing for an informed decision

You do not need to have every question worked out in advance. Start with what is troubling you and what you hope to understand. The consultation gives you an opportunity to discuss your options and ask how a care plan would be reviewed.

Do not stop prescribed medicines without speaking to your doctor. Complementary care should be discussed alongside your existing treatment. NHS guidance.
